Why black wood for a timber house?

The Shou Sugi Ban technique has been around for centuries. Inspired by this Japanese technique, we burn high-quality wood in our workshop in Leersum. By using black charred wood, you give the building or home a timeless, warm and unique look. Each type of burnt wood has its own look: sleek, robust or, on the contrary, very lively. What suits your design best? We will be happy to advise you.

Durable cladding for your timber house

At Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban, we value sustainability. It is our mission to make the world a more beautiful and sustainable place. That is why we work exclusively with wood species from sustainably managed forests. For every tree used, a new tree is planted. Do you also value the sustainability of your timber-frame house? Then we are your ideal partner.

About the production process

At Zwarthout | Shou Sugi Ban, we combine the traditional Shou Sugi Ban technique with modern techniques. Our fire masters char the wood in our self-developed oven. Each type of wood is burnt at a different temperature and speed. Within our collection, we have charred and brushed wood.
The brushed varieties are brushed after firing in the oven and treated with a water-based stain or oil. This creates unique wooden planks, each one created with an eye for detail. Our specialists are also happy to assemble the wood for you. Invisibly and precisely.
